Psychosocial Support Safe Haven

Invalid Date

Creating a nurturing space for children with disabilities and their mothers to access counseling, peer support groups, and stress-relief activities.

Psychosocial Support Safe Haven

At Graceland Child Care, we know that caring for a child with disabilities can feel lonely and overwhelming. The Psychosocial Support Safe Haven is a loving, judgment-free space where mothers and their children can breathe, heal, and connect.

Every second Saturday, our center in Lilongwe opens its doors for a full morning of activities:

  • One-on-one and group counseling with trained facilitators
  • Art therapy and music sessions that help children express feelings they cannot put into words
  • Peer support circles where mothers share experiences, cry, laugh, and realize they are not alone
  • Simple stress-relief activities like guided relaxation and storytelling
  • Light refreshments and a safe play corner for the children

This is more than a program — it is a family. Mothers tell us they leave feeling lighter, stronger, and hopeful. Many say, “For the first time, someone understands what my day is really like.”

Impact Metrics (as of November 2025)
  • Number of direct beneficiaries: 68 individuals (38 children with disabilities + 30 mothers/caregivers)
  • Households reached: 42 families across 6 Lilongwe wards (Area 25, Mtandile, Chinsapo, Kawale, Biwi, and Mgona)
  • Communities touched: 6 neighborhoods + outreach to 3 local churches and 2 primary schools
  • Reported outcomes: – 80% of mothers report reduced stress and better mental health – 10 mothers have become volunteer advocates speaking at community events – 15 children show improved social interaction after regular art & music therapy
Goal

Raise MWK 800,000 by December 2026 to cover facilitator stipends, therapy materials (paints, instruments, mats), transport refunds for mothers, and light refreshments for 50 families every month.

How you can help
  • Donate any amount — MWK 25,000 covers art materials for one full session
  • Volunteer as a counselor, musician, or friendly helper
  • Share this project with your friends and family

Every contribution keeps the Safe Haven’s doors open and hearts healing.

Zikomo kwambiri — thank you for giving families a place to feel safe and supported.
